On Chevrolet Chevettes from 1977 onward, the ignition switch sits inside the brake pedal support, and a rod and rack system links it to the
Ignition Lock Cylinder to reduce car theft. First, set the ignition switch to 'OFF-UNLOCKED'. If you already have the lock cylinder out, pull up the switch's actuating rod until you feel a fixed position, then move it down twice. When ready to remove the switch, put it at 'OFF-UNLOCK', and confirm you've selected neutral gear before putting it back. First, use the switch slider to go two spots to the right on the dial from 'ACCESSORY' to 'OFF/UNLOCK'. The rod fits in a hole underneath the slider, and requires two simple screws to attach it to the
Steering Column. Keep just the bottom screw tight, as the second one needs to be only 35 pounds of torque force.
