GMC Sonoma Crankshaft Seal

The Crankshaft Seal on GMC Sonoma is an important part of the car fitted at the frontal side of the engine with the primary function of avoiding leakage of the engine oil in the crank case. This round seal is usual of metal rubber and is used to ensure that lubrication is provided on certain vital parts of the engine to reduce the amount of friction hence increasing the life of the engine. A crankshaft seal, like all the other seals can get damaged or wear out and this will lead to matters such as oil leakage and poor engine performance. Crankshaft seal failure symptoms can suggest a change in a vehicle that has traveled many miles. Even though there may be differences in the style of this housing depending on model year, differences in the material or the mode of construction, its role of sealing and protecting the engine remains the same.

Each OEM GMC Sonoma Crankshaft Seal we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

GMC Sonoma Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Can the rear main bearing oil seal be replaced without removing the oil pan or crankshaft on 2.2L four cylinder engine on Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma?
A: The rear crankshaft bearing oil seal can be changed without taking out the Oil Pan or crankshaft. The first thing you need to do is to remove the transmission. If you have a manual transmission, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. You'll then take out the flywheel or driveplate. Carefully pry the seal out of the block using a seal removal tool or large screwdriver. However, ensure that you don't scratch or nick the crankshaft in this process. After removing it in this way, clean bore in the block and crankshaft at seal contact surface. Determine whether there are any scratches, nicks on its surface that might damage new seal lip and therefore lead to oil leakage. When crankshaft is damaged, new different crankshaft is required only. Lightly coat both outer edge of a new seal with clean engine oil and the lip of its mouth with engine oil as well. Use J34924 GM tool(if available) and press it into place until it is fully seated with rear facing towards front of engine where necessary, otherwise just carefully work seal lip over end of crankshaft and tap seal into bore until square and seated with hammer and blunt drift when no tool is available. Next step is installation of a flywheel or driveplate as per your choice; on other hand if it's a manual transmission reinstall pressure plate plus clutch disc accordingly after which fix back transmission eventually.
  • Q: How to replace the front oil seal on 2.2L four cylinder Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma's timing chain cover?
A: Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the drive belt. Raise the vehicle and securely place it on jackstands. Remove the hub retaining bolt. Place a bar through one of the pulley holes and wedge it against the bottom of the front cover to keep the pulley from turning while loosening the pulley bolts. Remove the pulley hub. Use a puller if necessary. Note how the seal is installed-the new one must face the same direction! Carefully pry the Crankshaft Seal out of the cover with a seal puller or a large screwdriver. Be very careful not to distort the cover or scratch the crankshaft! Apply a thin layer of engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the Crankshaft Seal lip and to the outer edge of the new seal. Install the seal in the cover with the lip (open end) facing IN. Drive the seal into place with a large socket and a hammer. Make sure the seal enters the bore squarely and is driven in until the front face is flush with the cover. The seal can also be replaced if the timing chain cover has been removed for other work. Support the cover on a block of wood and drive the seal out from the backside. Install a new seal into the bore. Reinstall the timing chain cover with a bead of RTV sealant applied to the mating surface of the oil pan. Apply a small amount of RTV sealant on the crankshaft Woodruff key. Align the slot in the hub with the crankshaft Woodriff key, then press the hub onto the crankshaft until it bottoms against the crankshaft timing gear. The hub retaining bolt can be used to press the hub into position. Install the crankshaft pulley on the hub. Use a non-hardening thread-locking compound on the bolt threads. Tighten the hub-to-crankshaft bolt. Install the drive belt.
  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on 4.3L V6 Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Remove the upper and lower fan shrouds, the cooling fan, and the drive belt. Remove the bolts and separate the crankshaft drive belt pulley from the vibration damper. Remove the lower flywheel cover and have an assistant wedge a large screwdriver in the flywheel ring gear teeth to hold the engine from turning while you remove the bolt from the front of the crankshaft with a socket and breaker bar. Then use a puller to detach the vibration damper. Carefully pry the seal out of the cover with a seal removal tool or a large screwdriver. Clean the bore to remove any old seal material and corrosion. Position the new seal in the bore with the open end of the seal facing IN. Apply a light film of grease to the lip of the seal. Drive the seal into the bore with GM tool no. J-23042A, or equivalent, until it's completely seated. Reinstall the vibration damper, aligning its groove with the keyway in the crankshaft. Use a punch or screwdriver and hammer to drive the Crankshaft Seal out of the cover from the back side. Support the cover as close to the seal bore as possible. Clean the bore to remove any old seal material and corrosion. Support the cover on blocks of wood and position the new seal in the bore with the open end of the seal facing IN. Drive the Crankshaft Seal into the bore with a large socket and hammer until it's completely seated. Reinstall the cover. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the disassembly. Start the engine and check for leaks.
