Chevrolet Trailblazer Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the Power Steering Pump?
A: To remove the V6 power steering pump, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, remove the radiator upper fan shroud and the serpentine drive belt. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump and unscrew the pressure hose fitting from the pump using a flare nut wrench. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the power steering cooler hose from the pump, plugging the hoses to prevent contaminants from entering. Free the wiring harness from the retainer on the power steering pump. Remove the pump mounting fasteners and lift the pump from the vehicle, being careful not to spill fluid on the painted surfaces. If necessary, use a special power steering pump pulley remover to remove the pulley from the pump. To install the pump, press the pulley onto the shaft using a special pulley installer tool or an alternative tool made from a long bolt, nut, washer, and socket. Position the pump in the mounting bracket and install the mounting bolts or nuts, tightening them to the specified torque. Connect the hoses to the pump, tightening the fittings securely. Install the drive belt and fan shroud. Finally, fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the system. For the V8 power steering pump removal, follow the same steps as for the V6, but also remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Engine Control Module (ECM) before removing the pump.
