Q: Where is the CMP sensor located and how do you remove it for Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo?
A: At the front and on top of the block, right behind the timing chain cover is where you can locate the CMP sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector to remove Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor from a V6 engine, then remove the sensor mounting bolt. After that, take out CMP sensor retaining bolt and CMP sensor itself. Remove the old CMP sensor 0-ring and throw it away. Installation is opposite of removing. Make sure a new 0-ring is used, lube it with clean engine oil film and tighten the CMP sensor bolt securely. To find the CMP sensor on timing chain cover for V8 models, use a flashlight. The electrical connector from the CMP sensor should be disconnected while taking off the sensor mounting bolt. Remove both: CMP sensor retaining bolt and CMP sensor itself. Its installation is reverse of removal process. The 0-ring should be lubricated with clean engine oil while tightening it securely to ensure that there are no leaks.
