How do you replace and adjust the shift cables on Chevrolet Equinox?

For the 2005 & 2006 models,ugeot uses a two piece cable so that vehicle owners need not replace the whole cable if only one half is damaged. To release the cable halves, when the shift lever is in Park, unbolt the shift cable from the firewall retainer bracket, drawing coupling cover down to reveal lock, and then pull it up and rotating the cable to gain access to the small clip to be removed. For the rear cable section, pop off the console, focus on the shift lever and place it in the park position, pop the shift cable end from the shift lever, pop the firewall grommet off, and then pull out the cable noting the passages it follows. Cable adjustment is done first and after that, installation is done in the reverse order. The front cable section consists in disconnecting the PCM, the battery, and the battery tray, then in unfastening the cover on the underhood shift lever, and pulling the cable end off the transaxle shift lever, and the cable from the firewall retainers with reinstallation the reverse of the mentioned procedures. For the 2007 and models above the extraction process is very similar to that of the previous model but in addition you have to take out the PCM, the battery and the battery tray, make sure that shift lever is in the 'Park' position, pry the cable end from the transaxle shift lever and remove the set screw from the shift knob and finally removed various trim panels to get the cable off the shift lever and extract it. For the 2005 and 2006 models adjustment happens at the union of the two cables and this can only be achieved with the shift stick at Park, sliding back the white cover, on the lock button, pulling up the central tabs of the lock button, allowing the rear cable to set itself and finally making sure the white cover traps the lock button. On the 2007 and subsequent models, the adjustment is done at the transaxle end of the cable, especially the transaxle shift lever, the tab that presses to slide the adjustment lock cover, the two tabs that pinch to release the lock and ensuring that the adjustment lock applied before testing the transmission for proper functioning.
