Chevrolet Equinox Transfer Case Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove and install the transfer case on Chevrolet Equinox?
A: Loosen the right front wheel lug nuts and driveaxle/hub nut, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Drain the transfer case lubricant, remove the driveshaft, and take off the right front wheel and drive-axle. For the NVG-900 transfer case, remove the intermediate shaft and the retaining ring from the inner part of the intermediate shaft stub shaft, then use a puller to remove the stub shaft. Next, remove the transfer case mounting bracket and disconnect the vent hose. Support the weight of the transfer case with a floor jack, then remove the four mounting bolts. Unbolt the rear transaxle mount from the frame while leaving it attached to the transfer case, pull the transfer case from the transaxle, and turn it to point the driveshaft flange toward the transaxle. While lifting, turn the transfer case to aim the driveshaft flange toward the ground, then carefully lower it. The rear mount can now be removed if necessary. For installation, follow the reverse order of removal, ensuring all bolts are installed hand tight before tightening, tighten the driveshaft fasteners, refill the transfer case with the proper type and amount of lubricant, and tighten the wheel lug nuts. For the Getrag 760 transfer case, remove both catalytic converters along with the front exhaust pipe sections and support the rear exhaust pipes with wire. Remove the transfer case mounting bracket, place a floor jack under the transaxle, and then remove the rear transaxle mount and bracket. Remove the transfer case mounting bolts and take it out of the vehicle. For installation, again follow the reverse order of removal, tightening the exhaust system fasteners, driveshaft fasteners, and transfer case fasteners, refill the transfer case with the proper type and amount of lubricant, and tighten the wheel lug nuts.
