Chevrolet Equinox Balance Shaft Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What procedure is covered for the removal of the balance shaft chain and balance shafts in 2.4L four cylinder engine on Chevrolet Equinox?
A: This procedure includes the dismantling of a balance shaft chain and balance shafts with the restrictions that the shafts has to be removed from the engine block and that this block is located inside the vehicle so the engine has to be removed first. If there is a problem with the balance shafts that require their pulling out, the engine has to be pulled out anyway since the only fix for balance shaft bushings is in an automotive machine shop. In case, mere chain replacement is being done, other steps that are not necessary can be ignored. Start by removing the battery's negative terminal and dropping the oil pan to drain it. Siants place the engine driving gear at TDC for cylinder no 1, then take off the timing chain, the guides and sprockets and the balance shaft chain tensioner and the guides. The next step is to take off the balance shaft drive chain and keep the camshaft non-rotating. If the balance shafts are being removed, then remove the retainer bolts and the shafts from the engine block, but you'll have to make sure that you note down the position of each shaft as they are unique and cannot be swapped around for the other one. Wash all components and check on the condition of the chain tensioners, guides and sprockets and where necessary replace them. It is recommended that the crankshaft timing mark be positioned at 6 O'clock before fitting the balance shaft chain and the engine should not be turned if it has been moved by mistake. Place the balance shafts properly and fasten the retainer bolts; the sprockets should be adjusted and the chain fitted with the colour coded links to the alignment marks. Once the positioning is done, fits the guides in place then set the tension arcs before fixing the tensioner arc. Double check all the timing marks, replace the timing chain and all other components removed, reconnect the battery, install a new oil filter and refill the crankcase with oil, and finally a road test with and eye out for any leaks.
