Q: How is the turbocharger integrated into the exhaust manifold and can it be serviced separately?
A: The turbocharger is integrated into the exhaust manifold and cannot be serviced separately. The turbocharger/exhaust manifold are removed as an assembly. First, drain the engine coolant. Then, remove the air filter housing outlet duct. Detach the PCV hose from the turbo charger. Remove the turbocharger heat shield ( Heat shield mounting bolts). Disconnect the electrical connector from the turbocharger wastegate regulator solenoid valve. Also detach the wiring harness from its retaining clip. Place a drain pan under the engine. Remove the turbocharger oil feed pipe banjo bolt, along with the sealing rings. Disconnect the oil feed pipe from the turbocharger. Remove the turbocharger oil feed pipe-to- block bolt, then remove the pipe and gaskets. Remove the turbocharger coolant return pipe and gasket. While holding the coolant feed pipe from turning, remove the coolant feed pipe banjo bolt, feed pipe and gaskets. A special tool EN-49942 wrench is available; the wrench is made to hold the coolant feed pipe while allowing an extension and socket to be inserted through the tool to remove or install the feed pipe banjo bolt. Detach the charge air cooler inlet pipe from the turbocharger. Remove the catalytic converter. Remove the oil return pipe bolts from the bottom of the turbocharger and separate the pipe flange from the turbocharger. Lower the vehicle and unbolt the turbocharger/exhaust manifold mounting nuts in reverse order of the tightening sequence. On 2016 and later models, there is no exhaust manifold the turbocharger bolts directly the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold is integral to the cylinder head. Remove the turbocharger and gasket from the cylinder head. On 2016 and later models, the turbocharger gasket has been combined with a heat shield and must be replaced as an assembly. Install a new gasket over the studs, and then install the turbocharger/exhaust manifold on the studs. Install new mounting nuts and tighten the nuts in sequence. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Use new sealing washers and tighten the oil and coolant line bolt. Refill the cooling system and change the engine oil and filter.
