Q: How to remove and install catalytic converters?
A: Wait until the engine has cooled completely before beginning this procedure. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the Oxygen Sensors. If the catalytic converter is equipped with a heat shield, unscrew the bolts and remove the heat shield. If equipped, remove the heat shield mounting bracket. Remove the fasteners that secure the catalytic converters' upper flanges to the exhaust manifolds. If the threads are severely damaged or rusted, apply some penetrant to the threads and wait awhile before loosening them. On 2004 and earlier models, remove the exhaust pipe center support mounting bolts. Loosen the converter-to-rear exhaust pipe bolt/nuts. If the threads are severely damaged or rusted, apply some penetrant to the threads and wait awhile before loosening them. Separate the catalytic converters from the manifolds and exhaust pipes. Note: On all models except 5.7L engines the catalytic converters are located close to each other, with a short exhaust pipe connecting them together. The right or left side can be replaced as a single unit. On 5.7L engines, the converters are located at the front of the vehicle near the engine and in the intermediate exhaust pipes. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to use new flange gaskets.
