Chevrolet Colorado Clutch Disc Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Clutch Disc,Pressure Plate and Release Bearing for Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon?
A: The assumption for working on a clutch system is that the engine will remain in place and access to clutch components will be through removal of the transmission. For cases where the engine or transmission has been removed, it is advisable that unless they are new or in nearly perfect condition, replacing the clutch components which are relatively low-cost is recommended because it could be cheaper than accessing them.To start off, the transmission is taken out of the vehicle supporting an engine. Engine hoists or support fixtures can assist, but if one uses a jack beneath an engine, he or she should put a piece of wood between jack and oil pan to distribute load. At that time, leave the clutch release bearing assembly attached to the transmission. As we remove the clutch disc,a clutch alignment tool is put through its hub.The flywheel and pressure plate should be carefully inspected for indexing marks or marked manually for alignment purposes. The pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts are loosened in a criss-cross pattern, and after relieving all spring pressure, remove the bolts, pressure plate, and clutch disc from there. Inspection includes checking for defects and imperfections on the flywheel; inspecting pilot bushing; examining lining of clutch disc for wear/damage; replacing release bearing; evaluating pressure plate for excessive wear, damage or distortion. Light glazing can be removed from pressure plate friction surface using sandpaper or emery cloth. The installation steps involve cleaning up flywheel and pressure plate surfaces with brake system cleaner; positioning clutch disc as well as pressure plate against flywheel; centering cluch disc with an alignmet tool ; tightening gradually pressure plat-to-fly wheel bolts in a crosswise manner; lubricating release bearing face with high temperature grease; finally installing clutch release bearing, transmission and all previously removed components while observing correct torque specifications and bleeding hydraulic system of clutch.
