Chevrolet Cobalt Tie Rod End Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove a tie-rod end?
A: To remove the tie-rod end, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Support the vehicle securely and apply the parking brake. Remove the wheel and then loosen the tie-rod end jam nut. Mark the relationship of the tie-rod end to the threaded portion of the tie-rod for proper reassembly. Loosen the nut from the tie-rod end ball stud and disconnect the tie-rod end from the Steering Knuckle arm using a puller. Remove the nut from the ball stud and discard it, then separate the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle and unscrew it from the tie-rod. To install the tie-rod end, thread it onto the tie-rod to the marked position and connect it to the steering arm. Install a new nut on the ball stud and tighten it to the specified torque. Securely tighten the jam nut and then install the wheel. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque. Finally, have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
