Chevrolet Camaro Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install a heater core in a Chevrolet Camaro?
A: This is a difficult procedure for the home mechanic, involving numerous hard-to-find fasteners, clips and electrical connectors. The instrument panel and lie-bar must be removed, which will require removal of the windshield. Have the air conditioning system discharged by an automotive air conditioning technician. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet pipes and the refrigerant pipes from the thermal expansion valve at the firewall. Remove the steering column. Remove the instrument panel and tie-bar support. Tag and disconnect the cables (if equipped) and electrical connectors from the HVAC unit. Remove the mounting fasteners and HVAC unit from inside the vehicle. Remove the heater core tube seal and support. Remove the Blower Motor housing fasteners and separate the blower motor housing from the HVAC housing. The heater core/evaporator core cover has melted plastic stakes where the mounting screws would normally be installed. To remove the melted stakes, use a drill bit and carefully cut the heads of the plastic stakes off. Remove the heater core cover. Pull the heater core out of the housing. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure to replace the plastic stakes from the cover with sheet metal screws. Use a new gasket where the two air conditioning pipes meet the expansion valve at the firewall. Refill the cooling system. Have the air conditioning system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
