Q: How to remove and install an alternator on an engine for Chevrolet Astro?
A: Removal begins with disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On CMFI and CSFI engines, the air cleaner assembly is removed. On carbureted TBI engines (and CMFI engines, if necessary), the upper fan shroud is removed. The electrical connectors are then detached from the alternator. If necessary, the drivebelt is removed from the alternator pulley before the alternator mounting bolts and braces (if used) are removed. Finally, the alternator is removed from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal. On models equipped with multiple V-belts, the drivebelt adjustment procedure is performed.
