Q: How to remove and install Fuel Filter for Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood?
A: Observe all safety precautions when working around fuel. Always work in a well-ventilated area and avoid exposing fuel spray or vapors to a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area and store fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage. The in-line fuel filter provides filtration to protect the small metering orifices of the injector nozzles. It is located downstream of the electric fuel pump and is mounted on the underbody. The fuel filter is a one-piece construction that cannot be cleaned. If it becomes clogged, it must be replaced. Never smoke when working around gasoline and avoid all sources of sparks or ignition. Disconnect the negative battery cable, depressurize the fuel system, and remove the filter bracket retainer. For plastic type fittings, grasp the filter and one fuel line fitting. Twist the quick connect fitting 4 turns in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Squeeze the plastic retainer release tabs and pull the connection apart. For metal type fittings, use a fuel pipe quick-connect separator J37088 or equivalent. Insert the tool into the female side of the connector, then push inward to release locking tabs. Pull the connection apart. Remove the protective caps from the new filter and apply a few drops of clean engine oil to both tube ends of the filter and O-rings. Install the fuel filter so that the flow arrow follows the direction of fuel flow. Install the new plastic connector retainers onto the filter inlet and outlet tubes. Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs to snap into place. Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure they are secure. Before installing the fitting on the filter, wipe the filter end with a clean cloth. Inspect the inside of the fitting to make sure it is free of dirt or obstructions. Align the fitting and filter axially and push the fitting onto the filter end. Pull on the fitting to make sure it is fully engaged. Install the fuel filter and bracket on the frame. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
