Cadillac CTS Steering Wheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove and install the airbag module and steering wheel on Cadillac CTS?
A: Before removing the airbag module the steering wheel must be locked by turn the ignition key to Off and connect the negative battery terminal, wait at least two minutes or more. For 2007 and models prior to that - turn the steering wheel so the slots are lined up at the top and the bottom and use special tool #J-44298 for airbag module clips release. For 2008 and later models, there are clips on the holes on both sides of the steering wheel you need to press with a small screwdriver. Carefully pry on the airbag module away from the wheel, do this on the other side as well. Remove the airbag module electrical connectors by the unlocking of tabs present at their rear end. In case the steering wheel was turned in any direction, then it should be set straight and the key was pulled out. Slowly take out the airbag and put it aside where it won't topple over or get stepped on,Trim side up and no obstruction. Locate the position of the wheel and steering shaft before being able to remove the steering wheel. you use a key to undo the nut/bolt that holds the wheel to its place and gently shake the wheel until it comes off. Pass the wires and connectors through the steering wheel shaft because it will be pulled out. The clockspring is then fixed so that it cannot rotate; this should done without rotating the steering shaft when the wheel and the airbag are disconnected or removed to avoid damaging the clockspring. In case the clockspring has to be removed, then the steering column covers have to be taken off, the connectors disconnected and at last, the mounting screws have to be unscrewed. Regarding installation, if the clockspring was removed, center it by rotating the inner rotor counter clockwise until resistance is felt then clockwise 2 to 2-1/4turns, the electrical connector to be placed at 12 o'clock. To fix the wheel, one has to feed the wires and airbag connectors through the hole of the wheel which has match marks on them. Close the steering wheel nut to the right torque as recommended by the manufacturer for that particular car model. Perform the opposite of the removal procedures; make sure the connectors are correctly connected to the airbag module with safety tabs, up and should follow the color code of the connectors of the airbag. After inserting the clips, the airbag module will fit lower to the wheel inputting pressure that locks the clips in place.
