Q: How to remove and install an alternator in a Cadillac CTS?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the under-vehicle splash shield. Remove the drivebelt. For 3.2L V6 engines, remove the intake air duct mounting fasteners. Remove the alternator mounting fasteners and disconnect the alternator B+ terminal nut and electrical connector. Remove the alternator. For 2.8L, 3.0L, and 3.6L V6 engines (2007 and earlier models), install an engine support fixture or engine hoist. Disconnect the Battery Cable from the alternator and disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator. Disconnect the electrical connector to the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) and remove the engine mount lower nuts. Remove the alternator lower mounting bolts and raise the engine enough to access the upper mounting bolt. Remove the upper mounting bolt and remove the alternator. For 2008 and later models, disconnect the battery cable from the alternator and disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator. For V8 engines, remove the air filter housing and the radiator cooling fan. Remove the power steering pressure hose bracket fastener, if equipped. Remove the alternator mounting fasteners. Disconnect the battery cable from the alternator and disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator. If replacing the alternator, ensure the new/rebuilt unit looks identical to the old alternator in terms of electrical terminals and identification numbers. Swap the pulley if necessary. Installation is the reverse of removal. Reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery and check the charging voltage to verify the alternator is operating correctly.
