- Q: How to remove and install the steering knuckle on Buick Regal?A: Raise the vehicle and place it on jackstands, then remove the wheel and tire. Detach the brake caliper without disconnecting the brake hose, allowing it to hang without stressing the hose. Take off the brake disc/hub from the knuckle, followed by the removal of the three bolts securing the brake disc splash shield to the steering knuckle. Next, remove the cotter pin and the nut retaining the Tie Rod End in the steering knuckle, using a tool designed for Ball Joint removal to press the tapered tie rod end out. Remove the cotter pins from the upper and lower ball joint retaining nuts, then clean the threads of both ball joint studs. Loosen the retaining nuts for both ball joints by two turns, then press the tapered studs out of the steering knuckle. Remove the retaining nuts for the upper and lower ball joints, raise the upper Control Arm to separate the ball stud from it, and pull the steering knuckle upward to detach the ball stud from the lower control arm, removing the assembly. For installation, insert the lower ball joint stud into the lower control arm, lift the upper control arm, and insert the upper ball joint stud. Reinstall the tie rod end into the knuckle, securing it with the retaining nut tightened to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm), adjusting as necessary to align the castellations with the cotter pin hole before installing and securing the cotter pin. Install the splash shield-to-knuckle seal and shield, attach the bolts, and tighten them to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). Finally, reinstall the hub and disc, followed by the brake caliper, and then put the wheel and tire back on, adjusting the wheel bearings.
