    Q:
How to check and replace engine mounts on Chevrolet Cobalt? Posted by Customer
    A:
Engine mounts seldom require attention, but broken or deteriorated mounts should be replaced immediately or the added strain placed on the driveline components may cause damage or wear. During the check, the engine must be raised slightly to remove the weight from the mounts. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then position a jack under the engine oil pan. Place a large block of wood between the jack head and the oil pan, then carefully raise the engine just enough to take the weight off the mounts. Check the mounts to see if the rubber is cracked, hardened or separated from the bushing in the center of the mount. Check for relative movement between the mount and the engine or frame (use a large screwdriver or prybar to attempt to move the mounts). If movement is noted, lower the engine and tighten the mount fasteners. For replacement, disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On all engines except the 2.0L supercharged, remove the engine air filter and housing. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place a large block of wood between the jack head and the oil pan, then carefully raise the engine just enough to take the weight off the mounts. Caution: Do not disconnect more than one mount at a time unless the engine will be removed from the vehicle. Remove the engine mount through-bolt/nuts and detach the mount from the chassis bracket. Remove the nuts holding the mount to the engine bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use thread-locking compound on the mount bolts and be sure to tighten them securely. The engine/transaxle assembly must be "balanced" in its weight distribution among the several powertrain mounts, before the mounting bolts are tightened. Loosen all the mount bolts, then shake the engine from side to side and front-to-rear as much as possible to settle it. The tighten all the mounts in this order: transmission mount-to-transmission bolts (rear first, then middle, then front); engine mount-to-bracket bolts (center first); shake the engine again front-to-rear; rear mount through-bolt; then front mount through-bolt. Reconnect the battery.

    Q:
How do you replace the Transmission mounts on GMC Terrain? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the left mount on a 5-speed transaxle, first remove the battery and battery tray. Install an engine support fixture and connect the chains to the lifting brackets on top of the engine, or alternatively support the transaxle from below with a jack and a block of wood. Unbolt the mount from the engine and chassis, then remove it, and installation is the reverse of removal with all bolts tightened. For the rear mount, again install an engine support fixture and connect the chains, or support the engine/transaxle from below. On AWD models, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, remove the front wheels, disconnect the stabilizer bar from its links, and rotate it up for access. Remove the through-bolt from the rear mount, unbolt it from the frame, and remove it, with installation being the reverse of removal and all bolts tightened. For the front mount, install an engine support fixture, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, remove the mount through-bolt, unbolt it from the transaxle, and remove it, with installation being the reverse of removal and all bolts tightened. For a 6-speed transaxle, loosen the left front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, remove the left front wheel and inner fender splash shield, support the transaxle with a floor jack, remove the mount bolts, raise the transaxle using the jack, maneuver the mount out, and installation is the reverse of removal with all bolts tightened. For the rear mount, install an engine support fixture, remove the rear exhaust manifold, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, remove the mount through-bolt, unbolt it from the frame, and remove it, with installation being the reverse of removal and all bolts tightened. For the front mount, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, support the transaxle with a floor jack, remove the mount through-bolt, unbolt it from the transaxle, and remove it, with installation being the reverse of removal and all bolts tightened.

    Q:
How do you raise the Saturn Vue and support it securely on jackstands to replace the transaxle mount? Posted by Customer
    A:
Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then insert a large screwdriver or prybar between the mount and the transaxle to pry up. Ensure the transaxle does not move excessively away from the mount; if it does, replace the mount. For the left-end mount, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the through-bolts from the front and rear transaxle mounts while supporting the engine from below with a floor jack and a block of wood. Remove the battery, battery tray, and tray support, then disconnect the right and left upper engine mounts. Use the jack to lower the engine enough to allow for mount removal, then unbolt the left transaxle mount from the left frame, with installation being the reverse of removal. For the side mounts, with the engine/transaxle supported by a jack and a block of wood, remove the nuts and bolts to take off the mount, moving the transaxle slightly if necessary for clearance. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring all mount fasteners are installed before tightening any of them.
