Nitrogen oxides or NOx are products of combustion chamber and are formed from the combination of oxygen and nitrogen from incoming air particularly at temperature rise of 2500 degrees F and above NOx when emitted out in the tail pipe react with reactive organic compounds, hydrocarbons, and sunlight to from H2O and photochemical smog with contribution to forming O3. EGR is a method of reducing nitric oxides by circulating exhaust back into the cylinders causing, dilution and cooler burn. These concern the 2008 and earlier 3.5L V6 engines as the four cylinders do not employ an EGR system. The EGR system is evaluated by the Powertrain Control Module along with the EGR Valve and other sensors that factor its intrinsic working. Energising the solenoid effectively opens the EGR valve by lifting the pintle which permits the passage of exhaust gas from exhaust manifold to the intake manifold when the control module short circuits the power supply to the EGR valve through a transistor. The EGR valve utilizes a position feedback circuit also to take care of the pintle position - a sensor checks the position so that the EGR maintains the right status. High flow of EGR causes stalling of the engine, or rough idle while low flow can cause high combustion temperatures which can lead to spark knock or overheating. To remove the EGR valve, one needs to detach the electrical connector, remove the securing bolt and the mounting bolts, and preceded to clean the mating surfaces before installing a new gasket before reinstalling the bolts and connector in reverse order. In EGR pipe replacement, you need to take out the upper flange bolt of the EGR valve, and the lower flange bolts of the exhaust manifold, clean the pipe and then re-install it after making sure that the threads of the mounting flange bolts have been coated with anti-seize compound.
