How to remove and install the neutral safety switch for Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
    A:
First, the negative battery cable should be disconnected so that the neutral safety switch (which includes a back-up light switch) can be removed and installed from 4T60 and 4T60-E Transaxles. On 1992-93 Eldorado and Seville, the air cleaner housing and duct have to be removed. The shift linkage, electrical connector, and vacuum hose must come off next followed by the attaching nut and shift lever. Once complete in this order, the fuel line bracket and bolt are to be taken out, followed by the retaining bolts and then the switch. Reverse these steps to install with adjustment of SWITCH as specified in Adjustments for Neutral Safety Switch above; tighten retaining bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). The process is similar for 4T80-E Transaxle except that the control cable at the lever on transaxle manual shaft needs to come out first, after which this control cable bracket at transaxle has to go. Following this step, remove retaining nut but leave transaxle manual shaft lever on top of electrical connector & hose then remove retaining bolts and finally neutral safety switch. Reverse these steps to install with adjustment of SWITCH as specified in Adjustments for Neutral Safety Switch above; tighten retaining bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and manual shaft lever retaining nut until it is tightened to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). It is necessary that the neutral safety switch be adjusted so that engine will start in PARK or NEUTRAL only to prevent possible injury to person inside vehicle starting engine while vehicle is moving or not properly secured against rolling away causing injury or death due to collision or run-over accidents involving small children playing near vehicle wheels under driveway conditions which are limited visibility situations where walking slowly backward might be difficult without tripping on unseen obstructions such as toys left near garage doors obstructing view ahead while backing up at night; light switches cannot be seen easily enough due to darkness yet their position would prevent possible loss of life which could result if someone accidentally started automobile while children were playing outdoors near entryway into home or driveway leading onto street causing it to roll off hitting one or more individuals then running over them because they did not realize that there were people behind them at time when they put vehicle into motion since backup lights would not come on so person operating control switch had no way knowing otherwise. To adjust the neutral safety switch, loosen its retaining bolts, rotate transaxle manual shaft to NEUTRAL, and rotate switch until a 2.34 mm gauge pin can be inserted in adjustment hole. On 4T60 and 4T60-E transaxles tighten these switch retaining bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) or on 4T80-E, 106 inch lbs (12 Nm).

    Q:
How to replace the park/neutral position switch on Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
    A:
To start the removal and installation of the Neutral Safety Switch on 4T80-E Late Models, set the parking brake and move the gear selector to Neutral. Disconnect the electric plugs from the switch. Remove cable, lever, and then switch. The new neutral range inhibitor switch must be positioned correctly with an alignment tool before moving the transmission from neutral. Check for carrier cracks in needed places. Ensure the engine begins only when in park or neutral and test if the shifter works normally.

    Q:
How to adjust and replace the Neutral Safety Switch in Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
To adjust the shift lever switch for 1994 and earlier models, place the car in neutral (N) and move the switch housing all the way to the right towards low (L) gear position, then shift it into park (P) for proper adjustment. To replace it, place selector lever in neutral, unplug electrical connectors, spread tangs on housing and remove switch. Line up the actuator on the switch and hole in shift tube; then get rear part of switch situated into cutout of lower jacket while pushing down front until two tangs go under; and finally move shift lever to park. Connect electrical connectors. In order to replace or adjust this switch on 1995 or newer models firmly apply parking brake then put selector in neutral position. Pry cable off trans shift lever ball stud, take nut off holding shifter on shaft, remove lever. Disconnect electrical connector, remove mounting bolts and slide off the switch from shaft. If necessary lightly file end of shaft. When installing a new switch with shaft still at neutral align flats of the switch with flats on shaft and lower it onto it before putting in bolts. Adjust its alignment by moving as required. Reinstalling shift lever and cable, checking starting in park and neutral first then further adjusting if necessary by slackening mount bolts a bit while turning the switch so that it works properly.

    Q:
How do you replace and adjust the switch for the 1995 Chevrolet C1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Firmly apply the parking brake and set the shift lever to Neutral. Pry the shift cable from the transmission shift lever ball-stud, remove the nut retaining the shift lever to the shaft, and take off the lever. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts, and slide the switch off the shaft. Lightly file the shaft's end if needed. To install the switch with the shaft still in Neutral, align the switch's flats with those on the shaft, lower the switch onto the shaft, and install the bolts. Adjust the switch's alignment by moving it as necessary. Reinstall the shift lever and cable, verify starting in Park and Neutral, and adjust further if needed by loosening the mounting bolts and rotating the switch slightly until it functions correctly.
