To check the condition of the balljoint, raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels. Place a large prybar under the balljoint and try to pry it up while feeling for any movement between the balljoint and steering knuckle. Then, pry between the control arm and steering knuckle and try to lever the control arm down while checking for movement and if there is any movement, there is a worn balljoint. Another way to check is to have an assistant grasp the tire at the top and bottom and move the top of the tire in and out while touching the balljoint stud nut. If there is looseness, replace both the balljoint and steering knuckle. To replace, raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands, and then remove the front wheel and control arm. Drill out the rivets securing the balljoint and clean the control arm. Install the new balljoint and tighten the fasteners and then reinstall the control arm, wheel, and lug nuts and lower the vehicle and tighten the nuts.
