Located underneath the vehicle, the catalytic converter is an emission control device. This device reduces the pollutants in the exhaust gas stream such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen. These pollutants can be reduced by two catalysts that are used in the converter. If you suspect a problem, take it to a dealer or authorized emissions inspection facility for diagnosis and repair. Every time the vehicle is raised for underbody servicing, check the converter for leaks, corrosion and other dents which may have caused damage to this part. A vacuum gauge can tell if there is a restricted converter. If there is a sharp drop in vacuum after the fourth test compared to idle, then there may be a plugging or restriction in the converter. Because cutting could be required during replacement, it is best to let someone else replace it if one lacks these tools; this can be done at a muffler shop or dealer service department. To replace it, raise vehicle, disconnect oxygen sensor connector, take off flange nuts at front of converter and remove catalyst based on specific setup of exhaust system. The process of installation is simply reversing what was done when removing.
