    Q:
How to remove and reinstall a cylinder head? Posted by Customer
    A:
Don't try removing the cylinder head until the engine has completely cooled down to avoid distorting the head. Have new head bolts on hand before starting this project. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. After letting the engine cool, drain the coolant system completely. Take out the drivebelt and drivebelt tensioner. Next, remove the exhaust manifold and intake manifold. Then you can take off the timing chain. Label all electrical connectors obstructing cylinder head removal and mark each connector for reassembly as necessary. Remove head bolts running in opposite direction of tightening sequence then throw them away one by one. Loosen bolts incrementally by a quarter-turn.Camshafts, rocker arms, and hydraulic lash adjusters if necessary for a full head overhaul should be removed using a prybar at corners of gasket sealing surfaces between head-to-block mating surface avoiding prying in gasket sealing area.Lift on hammer with wood block,to get it going if difficult to lift out.Take care not to damage or scratch gasket sealing surfaces when placing cylinder heads on wood blocks.Remove old-style cylinder head gasket keeping track of its position so that it can be installed properly next time around. The carbon from both mating surfaces on the block and cylinder head is scraped off using a gasket scraper which is followed by wiping with lacquer thinner or acetone.Do not let debris fall into cylinders wrap open areas of motor with rags and use vacuum cleaner to suck any up.Examine engine block and cylinerhead matting services for damages.Straighten up those threaded holes on your block clean them up with tap.Position new gasket over dowels placed in an engine block ensuring that even while installing cylinder heads it will not move.Install new top end bolts starting two steps following manufacturer's procedure. To install camshaft sprocket, attach exhaust manifolsd, install intake plenum etc., just reverse order for remaining installation steps.Reconnect battery, change oil and filter, fill cooling system and start engine making sure that there are no leaks of the coolant or oil.

    A:
Verify the new gasket is positioned on the block dowels, then carefully place the cylinder head on the block without disturbing the gasket. Install new cylinder head bolts and tighten them following the recommended sequence to the specified torque, using a torque angle gauge for precise tightening.
