    Q:
How to conduct a thorough check of the air intake, air cleaner, and filter? Posted by Customer
    A:
At specific intervals, thorough checking of the air intake, air cleaner and filter should be done ensuring all clamps are tightly fastened on-air cleaner cover. To ensure dirty air does not enter the engine, it is recommended that the nuts retaining air cleaner cover are tightened properly. The throttle body for four-cylinder engines positions the air filter within the remote air cleaner housing located on the left side of the engine compartment for V6-powered models. Removing four screws holding top plate allowing caution to keep anything from falling into throttle body reveals a removable top which has to be lifted up gently in order not to drop anything into the throttle body before finally removing air filter element by lifting it out. Wipe out inside of housing and pull out old filter carefully. The new filter must be set in place correctly at its lower part of housing. Attach the top most plate of the air cleaner and then tighten nuts by hand only. For V6 engine's filters, find a securing nut on top cover of an air filter housing in rear compartment's left side, lift off cover and take out an element of an air filter. Additionally, a thermostatic air cleaner (Thermac) is featured in the four-cylinder engine which works by controlling inlet temperature through heated intake manifold vacuum or hot gases from exhaust manifold; this assembly is enclosed within a long snorkel inside its base plate overhang. Depending on temperature conditions, it could draw cooler outside exhaust air or hot exhaust gases from around manifold stove; hence it may occasionally be switched to hotter source by simply opening as well as closing heat stove door through a lever connected with it based upon temperature differential in order improve itself further or maintain previously achieved level. Vacuum hoses should be connected properly between intake manifold-temperature sensor and sensor-vacuum motor respectively; besides, make sure that flexible hose between Thermac and exhaust manifold attaches somewhere near below snorkel's tube outlet for heat stove. Look at the damper door through the air duct in order to check if it is working by removing the outside air duct from the snorkel and then looking down into the intake. Outside air should be open to it when engine is cold shutting off as soon as engine starts before opening up again to allow incoming outside air. It will take 10-15 minutes depending on atmospheric temperature for this damper door to fully close, although it can be expedited by reconnecting the snorkel air duct and driving away.

    Q:
How to remove and install an air filter? Posted by Customer
    A:
The top plate of the air cleaner has four cylinder engines with flanged hex nuts. Remove the old filter and then remove the top plate. Clean up the inside of the air cleaner container. Put in a new filter. Wait for the top cover to be placed back. The flanged hex nuts must be fastened firmly. V6 engines have their air filter located within a cylindrical air cleaner housing on the front left side of the engine compartment, put there by removing a top nut and lifting it out, cleaning up its housing and installing another one in place of it.

    Q:
How can the air filter be checked in the 1984 Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
To check the air filter, hold it up to strong sunlight or place a flashlight or droplight on the inside of the filter. If you can see light coming through the paper element, the filter is all right. Check all the way around the filter.
