The air filter is located inside a housing at the front of the engine compartment on all models. To remove the air filter, release the strap retainer latches, separate the cover halves, and lift the air filter element out of the inner housing. For 6.2L and 7.0L models, first remove the air filter housing, then take out the air filter retainer fasteners, and remove the retainer and filter from the air cleaner housing; note that on 6.2L models, the filter and retainer are one piece and must be replaced together. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element; if dirty, replace it, but if only moderately dusty, it can be reused by blowing it clean with compressed air from the back to the front surface. Since it is a pleated paper type filter, it cannot be washed or oiled, and if it cannot be cleaned satisfactorily, it should be discarded and replaced. While the cover is off, avoid dropping anything into the housing. It is crucial never to drive the vehicle with the air filter removed to prevent excessive engine wear and potential fire hazards. Wipe out the inside of the air filter housing, then place the new filter into the housing, ensuring it seats properly. For 5.7L and 6.0L engine models, ensure the top half of the housing is seated correctly and secure it with the clips. For 6.2L and 7.0L engine models, ensure the filter is seated into the retainer (if separate) and that the filter retainer is against the filter housing inlet, then tighten the fasteners securely using an alternating pattern, with the remaining installation being the reverse of removal.

For models from 2006 and earlier, loosen the clamp securing the inlet tube to the air filter cover, release the clamps that hold the two halves of the air cleaner housing together, then separate the cover halves and remove the air filter element. For all models from 2007 onward, except for the 2018 and later 4.3L V6 engines, unclip the air cleaner housing from the radiator support, unsnap the two clips holding the air cleaner cap, and remove the cylindrical air filter element. For the 2018 and later 4.3L V6 engines, disconnect the air filter housing outlet duct and clamp, remove the mounting screws securing the two halves at the top of the cover, disconnect the electrical connector, and lift the cover to remove the element. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element; if dirty, replace it, but if only moderately dusty, it can be reused by blowing it clean from the back to the front with compressed air.
