    Q:
How do you replace a wheel cylinder on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
Raise the vehicle and remove the wheel, then take off the brake drum. Clean around the hydraulic connection to the wheel cylinder and disconnect the line, plugging the end to prevent fluid loss and dirt contamination. Remove the brake shoe pull back springs, followed by the screws securing the cylinder to the flange plate, and disengage the push rods from the brake shoes to remove the cylinder. Using pliers, take off the boots from the cylinder and discard them, along with the piston cups. Inspect the cylinder bore and pistons for corrosion and pitting, discarding any pitted components, while polishing stained surfaces with crocus cloth around the circumference. Ensure hands are clean, dry, and free from contaminants, then clean the metal parts in new brake fluid or denatured alcohol, shaking off any surplus fluid for ease of handling. Lubricate the cylinder with clean brake fluid and insert the spring expander assembly, followed by new cups that must be clean, dry, and not lubricated, ensuring the flat surface is forward to enter the ends of the cylinder. Install the pistons with the flat surface uppermost without lubrication, then press new boots into the cylinder counter bores without lubrication. Position the wheel cylinder on the brake flange plate and install screws loosely, followed by the push rods and pull back springs, connecting the hydraulic line to the cylinder while adjusting as necessary to prevent stripping the threads. Tighten the cylinder mounting screws, install the brake drum and wheel, and bleed the braking system before lowering the vehicle to the ground.

    Q:
How do you remove the wheel cylinder on GMC Safari? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the wheel cylinder, start by raising the rear of the vehicle and supporting it securely on jackstands, while blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Then, remove the brake shoe assembly and clean any dirt or foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Disconnect the brake line, being careful not to pull it away from the wheel cylinder. Next, remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts and detach the cylinder from the brake backing plate, placing it on a clean workbench. Remember to immediately plug the brake line to prevent fluid loss and contamination. For the overhaul process, start by removing the bleeder valve, seals, pistons, boots, and spring assembly from the wheel cylinder body. Clean the wheel cylinder using brake fluid, denatured alcohol, or brake system cleaner, and use compressed air to remove excess fluid and blow out any passages. Check the cylinder bore for corrosion and score marks, using cloth to remove light corrosion and stains. If the defects cannot be easily removed or if the bore is scored, the cylinder must be replaced with a new one. Lubricate the new seats with brake fluid and assemble the brake cylinder components, ensuring that the seal lips face inwards. To install the wheel cylinder, place it in position and install the bolts. Connect the brake line and install the brake shoe assembly. Finally, bleed the brakes to complete the installation process.

    Q:
How do you rebuild a wheel cylinder on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Get the wheel cylinder rebuild kits before the start of the procedure. First, the brake shoes need to be taken out, second the brake line fitting need to be disconnected from the back end of the wheel cylinder and then the brake line needs to be capped to avoid contamination. Inserting curved needle-nose pliers remove the wheel cylinder retaining clip at the rear of the wheel cylinder. Otherwise, jam two awls into the access slots between the cylinder pilot and the retainer locking tabs and the latter will be bent away both at the same time. After this, detach the clip and then, remove the cylinder and put it on the cleaned working table. Special Tools for this procedure may include: Bleeder valve removal tool, Clamp to lock the bleeder valve during removal Rear access tool Piston removal tool Boots, pistons and seals removal tool Compressor to apply pressure Seal Installation tool Seal puller tool Spring compressor tool Front bearing retainer hold Remove the bleeder valve, the seals, pistons, boots, and the Spring assembly from the cylinder body. Clean the wheel cylinder using brake fluid, denatureal alcohol or brake system cleaner but do not use oils, greases, lacquers or petroleum-based solvents. Finally, use a pressurised air to expel as much liquid as possible and clear the passages. Check the condition of the cylinder bore as to corrosion and scores; Light scoring or rusting can be polished out with crocus paper but if the defects are deep or the bore is scored, replace the cylinder. Clean brake fluid should be applied to the new seals and the brake cylinder should then be assembled with the boots correctly positioned. Place the wheel cylinder on the backing plate as before and fasten it with the help of the new retaining clip. Begin the brake line fitting into the threads of the wheel cylinder and then with pressing the retaining clip to the wheel cylinder use the screwed handle between the wheel cylinder and the axle flange. Make sure that the clip and the cylinder are well seated, now remove the screwdriver and tighten the brake line fitting. Last of all, bleed the brake system.
