    Q:
How to Remove, Install and Service the Clutch Master Cylinder and Clutch Slave Cylinder on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The hydraulic clutch release system on models from 1988 and 1991 through 1992 consists of two assemblies, a master cylinder and line, and a release cylinder and line, the two being connected by a quick connect fitting. The master and release cylinders are non-rebuildable and the replacement assemblies containing the hydraulic fluid and bled prior to shipment. There are no individual parts such as valve bodies sold and apart from the replacement of the cylinder/line assemblies, the only service which can be carried out on the clutch system is bleeding the system; the clutch pedal height or the free play cannot be altered. For removal you need to remove the left side underdash hush panel, the master cylinder pushrod clip, use hydraulic line disconnect tool to disconnect the quick connect fittings, and for the remote reservoir you need to remove the mounting screws while keeping the assembly upright. Turn the master cylinder anti-clockwise to unlock it and then unbolt it from the vehicle. To install it, position the master cylinder, into the hole made in the firewall, turn the cylinder counterclockwise to engage, tighten the anti-rotation screw, install and secure the reservoir, connect the quick-connect fittings, lubricate, slide the pushrod and install the bushing, reconnect the pushrod to the clutch pedal, and check the cruise control and make sure that is disengages when the clutch pedal is operated. As with the removal of the release cylinder, one must remove the negative battery terminal and then take out the hush panel, the pull off of the push rod, and the usage of the hydraulic line disconnect tool. Once the release cylinder has been unbolted the car will need the hydraulic lines mating together, the release cylinder bolted back to the transaxle, and the pushrod retainer oriented as needed. Models from 1989 and 1990 use a hydraulic clutch release system; entire new assemblies come pre-bled so that adjustments and bleeding should not be needed. The mounting and dismounting procedures are similar, not containing special instructions about the removing and installation of the plastic pushrod retainer, yet paying much attention to the fact that it is forbidden to remove the retainer during the installation; normal effort is to be applied to the clutch pedal.
