Begin by measuring the crankshaft endplay using a dial indicator aligned with the crankshaft, zeroing it after prying the crankshaft to the rear, then checking the reading after prying it to the front; typical endplay ranges from 0.003 to 0.010 inches. If a dial indicator is unavailable, feeler gauges can be used to determine clearance. Loosen the main bearing cap bolts gradually and in reverse order of tightening, then gently tap the cap assembly to remove it, ensuring not to drop the bearing inserts. Carefully lift the crankshaft out, ideally with assistance due to its weight. For installation, ensure the engine block and crankshaft are clean and inspected. Remove any original bearing inserts, wipe the bearing surfaces clean, and lay new upper main bearing inserts in the block, ensuring oil holes align. Install thrust bearings in the center cap with grooves facing out, then place lower main bearing inserts in the cap assembly. Clean the bearing faces and crankshaft journals, then position the crankshaft in the block. Check the main bearing oil clearance using Plastigage, ensuring it is within the specified range. If clearance is incorrect, verify cleanliness and consider different bearing sizes if necessary. After removing Plastigage, clean the journals and apply a thin layer of grease to the bearing surfaces before reinstalling the crankshaft. Apply RTV sealant to the main bearing cap mating surface, position the cap assembly, and install new bolts, tightening them in sequence. Seat the thrust bearing by tapping the crankshaft, then tighten the inner and outer main bearing cap bolts to the specified torque. Recheck crankshaft endplay and rotate the crankshaft to ensure it moves freely, addressing any binding issues before installing the new rear main oil seal.
