    Q:
How do you inspect, replace and reinstall Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate on Chevrolet Tracker? Posted by Customer
    A:
Getting to the clutch components is normally through the withdrawal of the transmission but with the engine still installed in the car. When the engine is being pulled to do head or major over-haul, it is recommendable to check for wear and tear of the clutch plates and replace if necessary. Since it can be seen that the cost of such clutch components is much less than the time and energy which would be required to get at them, it is usual, where circumstances permit, to replace them every time the engine or transmission is taken out, unless these components are new or in very good condition. Start by disconnecting the clutch cable and thereafter, remove the transmission while holding the engine, using an engine lift, for example. When applying the jack make sure there is some piece of wood placed between the jack and the oil pan since the oil pump pickup lies almost at the bottom and will cause problems if the pan distorts. The clutch fork and release bearing can be a part of the housing for sometime. To support the clutch disc during removal, it is necessary to use a clutch alignment tool through the disc hub. Check the flywheel and pressure plate for indexing marks - if there aren't any, then make your own so you can get the bits lined up correctly when you put them back on. Gradually unscrew the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts in a diagonal manner so that all the spring tension should be released and then remove all of them, pressure plate and clutch disc. At the time of inspection there will always be certain markings, checks etc on the flywheel; if they are not very severe they should be machined smooth. Check pilot bearing and the lining of the clutch disc and make sure that lining extends to at least 1/16 above rivet heads and search for cracks. The clutch disc should also be accompanied by the replace of the release bearing. Check if the pressure plate is worn out or damaged and replace it if so needed. Before the installation of the bolt, the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces should be free of oil or oil greasy. When the clutch disc and the pressure plate is well positioned to fit against the flywheel, an alignment tool can be used to align the two. Make the bolts of pressure plate to the flywheel as tight as possible with fingers, align the clutch disc properly and tighten the bolts to the torque prescribed. Lubricate the inner groove of the release bearing, as well as contacting surfaces of the release lever and input shaft transmission bearing retainer with high temperature grease. Finally, reassemble the clutch release bearing, reassemble the transmission part and all the other elements which were removed during the process making sure that all the bolts used are tightened to the standard torque settings.
