    Q:
How to check and adjust the tension on the air conditioning compressor belt for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
    A:
In case of the V6 engine, the air conditioning compressor is driven directly off of the crankshaft as a belt-driven component, and off of the water pump pulley in case of L4 engine. The belt must be tense enough to avoid twisting it excessively on its shafts and bearings. To identify the tension, disconnect the negative battery cable then find out which part of the belt can move most freely without resistance. This stretch should only move about f-in (13 mm). If it moves more than that, you need to adjust it by moving the compressor outwards from the engine through loosening up adjusting bolts for the compressor and mounting bolts. Tighten bolts and recheck adjustment. However, in case NC compressor drive belt is frayed or cracked, it should be replaced. In case equipped with one remove power steering drivebelt first from L4 engines then generator belt. Remove generator belt first from VG engines then power steering pump drivebelt if equipped. Loosen adjusting bolts for NC compressor then move towards engine until loose enough to remove from pulleys. Place a new belt over top of NC compressor, water pump, and crankshaft (V6) and adjust/ tighten accordingly. Finally reinstall generator and power steering pump belts/adjust/tighten them.

    Q:
What is the purpose of the generator belt and how should its tension be maintained for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The generator is a belt-driven component that is driven directly off of the crankshaft. Maintaining the proper tension on this belt is crucial to prevent excessive strain on the belt, as well as the generator's shafts and bearings. To check the tension of the belt, find the longest stretch and move it back and forth to gauge its slack; the distance should be about 13 mm.

    Q:
What drives the water pump and how are the belts adjusted or replaced for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The same belts driving both the generator and power steering pump (when equipped) also drive this water pump, which is additionally linked via an A/C compressor belt. The necessary process to follow in adjusting or replacing any of these belts is as stated below each respective component.

    Q:
How can you check the tension of each drivebelt for the 1985 Buick Skylark? Posted by Customer
    A:
The tension of each drivebelt can be checked by pushing on it at a distance halfway between the pulleys. The amount of deflection should be ¾ inch for belts with a pulley center distance of 7 to 11 inches, and ½ inch for belts with a pulley center distance of 12 to 16 inches.
