AIR system used in models from 1975 to 1980 pumps compressed air into the exhaust system around the exhaust valves so as to help in burning the unburned exhaust gases; it comprises of air injection pump/hoses/valves/tubes directing the air to the exhaust manifolds. Adjustments as applied to carburetors and distributors are uniquely different for AIR engines and these components are not interchangeable with typical engines. A alternates between closing off the air entering the engine to stop backfiring when manifold vacuum rises and uses a diverter value at cruising to channel air through the pump muffler and expels it by a relief valve at high rpms. Check valves are used in the system to prevent exhaust gases from entering the pump, and the AIR system used in the 231 V6 engines has some differences in this aspect. The efficiency of the system depends on the idle speed, ignition timing and dwell, which must be checked from time to time and the hoses and fitting must be checked for wear and tightness and the drive belt for wear and tension every one year or every 12,000miles. As for access to the air pump: disconnect the air hoses, secure the pump pulley, loosen the mounting bracket bolt, remove the drive belt, unbolt the pump mounting bolts and then remove the pump; installation is the reverse of removal. Subsequently, for the diverter valve, the vacuum sensing line and other hoses need to be disconnected, and then the valve is unbolted from the connection, the original gasket must be replaced with a new one and then nuts and bolts must be tightened to around 85 INCH LBS.

The air injection reactor system acts to minimize the amount of hydrocarbons in the exhaust through the introduction of fresh air into the exhaust manifold ports of each engine cylinder helping in the burning of the uncompeted hydrocarbons. It runs through all engine speeds and the passage of air is blocked only sometimes during deceleration and at high speeds when fresh air in abundance may cause back fires. In GM engine, the parts of this system include the air injection pump, an air diverter valve, manifold, and injection tubes, and the check valves that are provided at the end of hose connected to the pump. Installed automotive systems are dependable, but failure of any of them leads to engine surge, back firing, overheating sparks, although the air-pump is the most sensitive part. The drive belt should also be checked for crack or fray and also make sure that it has the right tension. The hose should be examined for flow when the engine is on, and the diverter valve should discharge air when tested. Exhaust gases should not re-enter the air pump and for this; check valves should be installed and the functionality checked. Hose connection leaks can be done with the help of a soapy water solution to identify the leaks. For removal and installation of this air pump, the disconnect hoses, and compress the drive belt and finally remove the securing bolts. The diverter valve comes with hoses as well as securing bolts to be disconnected during removal and also has some particularities to be used with regard to the replacement valves. High temperatures may mean that the air manifold and injection tubes will need penetrating oil to remove and installation needs anti-seize compound on threads. These valves cannot be removed without disconnecting the air supply hose, then using wrenches for slow and cautious removal; the process of installation is similar to the process of removal.

The AMS provides additional oxygen to sustain combustion after exhaust gases exit the combustion chamber, functioning similarly to the AIR system.

To service the diverter valve, detach the vacuum sensing line and other hoses, unfasten the valve from its connection, and reinstall it using a new gasket, ensuring the securing bolts are tightened to 85 inch lbs.

For the check valve, disconnect the line from the pump assembly and unscrew it from the air injection pipe, with installation following the reverse order.
