1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the air cleaner assembly, hot-air pipe, and hot-air shroud. 3. Remove the generator or air conditioning brackets where they attach to the exhaust manifold. 4. Disconnect the exhaust pipe where it connects to the exhaust manifold flange, using penetrating oil if needed. 5. Pry back the metal retainers from the bolt heads. 6. Remove each of the bolts securing the exhaust manifold. 7. Remove the manifold from above, noting that on some late models it may be necessary to disconnect the intermediate shaft of the steering column for better access.

Place the new gasket into position on the cylinder head using a thin film of sealer to secure it.

Unbolt and remove the exhaust manifold, clean the mating surfaces, and check for warpage and cracks.

Proceed to remove the oil level indicator tube, then take off the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head nuts or bolts.

1. Repeat the battery disconnection. 2. Drain the coolant. 3. Remove the mass airflow sensor, air duct, and crankcase ventilation pipe if needed. 4. Remove the nuts attaching the crossover pipe to the rear exhaust manifold. 5. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the rear spark plugs. 6. Remove the EGR pipe and transaxle dipstick tube if obstructing access. 7. Unbolt the power steering pump without removing the hoses. 8. Detach the alternator support bracket. 9. Remove the heater hoses and coolant tube brackets above the exhaust manifold. 10. After removing the exhaust manifold heat shield and engine lifting bracket, detach the IAC wiring from the throttle body. 11. Set the parking brake, block the rear wheels, and raise the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands. 12. Under the vehicle, remove the two exhaust pipe-to-manifold bolts. 13. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector at the rear manifold. 14. Remove the oxygen sensor to prevent damage during manifold removal. 15. Finally, remove the six bolts to detach the manifold from the head.

Scrape all traces of gasket material off the exhaust manifold and cylinder head mating surfaces, being careful not to scratch or gouge the aluminum cylinder head to avoid exhaust leaks. Wipe the surfaces clean with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner or acetone, and clean all bolt and stud threads before installation using a wire brush on the manifold mounting studs and a tap for the cylinder head bolt holes.

Clean the mating surfaces, inspect for distortion and cracks, and check for warpage as previously described. Position the manifold with a new gasket, install the mounting nuts finger tight, and tighten them gradually from the middle outwards until all are torqued.

After that, remove the exhaust manifold brace and separate the exhaust pipe flange nuts from the manifold studs, pulling the pipe down slightly to break the seal.
