Q:
How to replace the lock cylinder and ignition switch in Cadillac DeVille and DTS? Posted by Customer
A:
In early designs, the lock cylinder is located on the right-hand top of the steering column, and this means one has to first disconnect the negative battery cable, disable the airbag system, remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch. The buzzer switch is pulled out using needle-nose pliers, while a lock cylinder retaining screw is removed. Pulling the lock cylinder straight out of the column also includes detaching PASS key wiring harness for those cars that have it. After placing a new Ignition Lock Cylinder into lock cylinder it must be in turn installed in column aligning tab with keyway and fastened by a retaining screw. PASS key system equipped models use wire terminals which are taped to mechanics wire about 18 inches long and pulled through steering column after routing and connection are checked. The remaining components are reinstalled as needed. About ignition switch, it is located at bottom part of steering column and can only be accessed by lowering column after disabling airbag system. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector and unscrew retaining screws in order to remove an ignition switch that connects with an Ignition Lock Cylinder using an actuating rod. Making sure that switch is in Lock position, attach electrical connector to new switch; connect actuating rod then push switch into position before securing it with screws followed by testing its operation. On later models such as DeVille or Seville, replacing a lock cylinder/ignition switch entails removing the steering column cover or other components necessary to reach release mechanisms, then maneuvering a lock cylinder into Start or Run positions so as to take it off. A replacement Ignition Lock Cylinder should be installed by aligning it with slot and locking tabs, making sure the key is present then clicking it into place.
