    Q:
How to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and replace the timing chain and sprockets in 2.2L four cylinder engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and if there is an option of lock out on Theftlock audio system, it should be disabled. Lift off the crankshaft pulley and the timing chain cover you will be needing later. Before removing the chain and sprockets you can only estimate the conditions of the sprockets through observing the conditions of the teeth and also you can check the tensioner of the timing chains. Should any of them get worn out, it should be replaced since failure results in fluctuating of the engine performance and HIJ's fuel consumption. Any Hytera component that requires replacement should have other corresponding components such as the tensioner replaced as well. For the removal of the chain and sprockets, sometimes it is easier to fit a bolt in the crankshaft and turn the engine until the camshaft and crankshaft dots are lined up. Take off the timing chain tensioner upper bolt and then loosen the tensioner Torx bolt but do not take it out. Remove the cam shaft sprocket and the timing chain by using a little force as possible. If the crankshaft sprocket is to be removed then use puller only for the purpose. For installation use moly-base grease to lubricate the thrust side then fits the crankshaft sprocket and make sure that the Woodruff key is inserted correctly. Slide the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket and reset the timing marks and then install the sprocket while applying the right amount of torque not hammering the sprocket to the block. One final time it is important to verify the positioning of timing marks and correct if inappropriately positioned. The 'dirty' side of the chain must be lubricated with clean engine oil, the tensioner spring is pressed in with a special tool and locked in place with a nail or cotter pin. Last of all, reinstall the other parts in the reverse of the sequence in which they were removed.

    Q:
What tools are required for this procedure for the 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure requires special tools available at automotive tool companies and some auto part stores, including camshaft timing clamps, a camshaft sprocket holding tool, a camshaft and intermediate shaft sprocket remover, and a tensioner retractor tool. If these specialty tools are not available, similar tools should be obtained and adapted for this application.
