Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, ensuring that the Theftlock audio system's lockout feature is turned off if applicable. In the engine compartment, disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle lever and bracket, then remove the shift handle and floor console if equipped. Disconnect the shift cable from the floor shift lever and bracket, then remove the right and left side sound insulators from the under dash portion of the console and pull back the carpet for access to the cable. Trace the cable up to the firewall grommet, remove the screws from the grommet retainer, detach the grommet and retainer from the firewall, and pull the cable assembly through. For column shift, remove the air cleaner in the engine compartment, disconnect the cable from the transaxle lever and bracket, then remove the left sound insulator under the dash. Disconnect the cable bracket on the steering column and detach the cable from the column shift lever, dislodge the grommet in the firewall, and withdraw the cable from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, followed by adjusting the cable. The shift control cable consists of two sections joined by a coupler retained by a metal spring clip; do not remove this clip. If damaged, replace the entire assembly. Install the two sections of the new cable to their respective end mountings at the transaxle and shift control, pushing the adjuster clip into its first "notch." With both the transaxle and shift control in the Neutral position, connect the two halves until they lock together, then push the clip into its final position, ensuring the smaller clip in the transaxle end of the coupler is flush. Test the connection by pulling the two halves of the cable apart; once engaged, do not remove the adjuster clip to avoid needing a new cable set.
