    Q:
How do I remove and install a transmission? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the transmission, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the skid plate and skid plate crossmember if necessary. Drain the transmission fluid and detach the filler tube from the engine. Remove any exhaust components that interfere with transmission removal and then remove the rear driveshaft. Support the engine from above with an engine hoist or jack, and support the transmission with a jack. Remove the nuts securing the transmission mount and unbolt the crossmember. Lower the engine and transmission to reach the top and sides of the transmission. Disconnect the shift cable, remove the transmission heat shield, and disconnect the vent hose. On the left side of the transmission, disconnect electrical connectors and the fuel line support bracket. Remove the inspection plug and mark the relationship of the torque converter to the driveplate. Remove the flywheel inspection cover on V8 models and remove the torque converter bolts. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines and secure the transmission to the jack. Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine and remove the fill/dipstick tube bracket bolt. Clamp locking pliers on the bell housing case and move the transmission to the rear to disengage it from the engine block dowel pins. Lower the transmission with the jack. To install the transmission, make sure the torque converter is securely engaged in the pump. Raise the transmission into position and turn the torque converter to line up the holes with the driveplate. Move the transmission forward until the dowel pins and torque converter are engaged. Install the transmission dipstick tube and seal, then install and tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts. Install the transmission crossmember and remove the jacks supporting the transmission and engine. Install the torque converter-to-driveplate bolts and new retaining rings on the quick-connect fittings. Plug in the transmission electrical connectors, install the heat shield, and connect the shift cable. Install the torque converter inspection cover, transfer case (if removed), driveshaft(s), and starter (if removed). Adjust the shift cable, install any exhaust system components that were removed, and remove the jackstands. Finally, fill the transmission with the specified fluid, run the engine, and check for fluid leaks.
