Q:
How to remove and install Manual transmission? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin the removal process, first disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the shift lever, lift the vehicle and safely support it on jackstands. Let out the transmission lubricant and pull out the driveshaft(s), wrapping up the transmission end to prevent any liquid loss and contamination. In case of a 4WD vehicle, take off the transfer case or uninstall braking system parts blocking access if required. Unbolt exhaust system components for clearance. Remove all wire harness connectors from the transmission and depending on model year, remove either clutch release cylinder or hydraulic line. Get rid of inspection cover on normal-duty (aluminum case) transmissions. Ensure that these wiring harness clips are present and can be detached from the transmission. Next, you need to separately support both engine and transmission with a special jack for latter. Remove nuts from crossmember bolts before raising the transmission slightly and removing crossmember. On heavy-duty (cast iron case) models of transmissions remove some bolts that connect it with clutch housing; on usual-duty models remove some bolts that connect transmission with engine.Remove all wires, then move the transmission and jack towards rear of vehicle until transmission input shaft clears clutch or clutch housing. Lower down transmission taking care not to step down on clutch pedal while it's out.Inspect those clutch components. For installment purposes after removing them if such was eventually done to this set of clutch components; attach/fit them into a heavy duty 4speed model clutch housing.Carefully lift up into position behind engine or clutch housing a transmission sliding it forward till engaging input shaft with hub on clutch plate.Avoid using excessive force- if input shaft does not slide into place, adjust either trans angle or input shaft in order to ensure proper engagement.Once flush with either clutch housing or engine install trans-to-engine/clutch housing bolts and tighten.Installation should include securing cross member as well as mounting point for this trans; then jacks can be picked up which supported both trans and engine.Previously removed components such as the transfer case (if any), the driveshafts, and parts of the exhaust system should be reinstalled. Reconnect all wires and hoses, check the transmission fluid level to ensure that it is correct, and lower vehicle. The shift lever should then be reinstalled, negative battery cable reconnected, vehicle road tested, and leakages checked for.
