    Q:
How to replace Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
    A:
If the key is difficult to turn, the issue may not lie with the ignition switch or the Ignition Lock Cylinder, but rather with the shift cable being out of adjustment. Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and waiting at least two minutes to allow the airbag system's capacitor to discharge. For vehicles with a tilt steering column, position the steering wheel halfway between the upper and lower tilt stops. Remove the steering wheel and the two screws from the lower steering column cover, then take off the lower cover. After that, remove the screws retaining the upper half of the steering column cover; while the upper cover cannot be fully removed without taking out the Ignition Lock Cylinder, it can be lifted enough to create space for work. To remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder, insert a bent-tip awl into the access hole for the retaining pin, turn the key to the START position, depress the retaining pin with the awl, release the key to the RUN position, and pull out the lock cylinder. For installation, insert the Ignition Lock Cylinder through the hole in the upper steering column cover, align the positioning tab and locking tab with the lock module, and push the lock cylinder into place until it clicks. The installation process is the reverse of removal. For the ignition switch, again disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and wait two minutes. Remove the steering wheel and both upper and lower steering column covers. Cut any cable ties securing the ignition switch wiring harness to the multi-function switch wiring harness and remove the bolt securing the ignition switch and multi-function switch electrical connectors. On early models, separate the ignition switch electrical connector from the turn signal and multi-function switch connectors. Disconnect the small electrical connector and the key alarm connector from the lock module assembly. For 2002 and earlier models, remove the ignition switch mounting screws and take out the ignition switch; for 2003 and later models, use two small flat-bladed screwdrivers to release the tabs on the ignition switch. The installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring that the gears between the ignition switch and the lock cylinder housing are correctly aligned to prevent starting issues or battery drain, and for 2002 and earlier models, tighten the ignition switch mounting screws to the specified torque.
