How to Remove and Install Rear Brake Shoes on Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
    A:
In order to take off the rear brake shoes of the 1500 model, to begin with, slightly loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, then lift the vehicle off the ground and remove the wheels. After that, take out brake caliper, mounting bracket and brake disc. Wash brake assembly using a brake system cleaner; next undo clip on shoe bottom by pushing it backwards and up to get shoe out of actuator. To do this, place one end of the shoe over the axle flange; then work it around and pull it away. Before installing a new shoe make sure you put adjuster screw star wheel inwards and verify if slots in adjusting screw are parallel to backing plate tappet slots or not. On fitting shoe always reverse removal procedure making certain ends of show seat properly into slot provided on adjuster screw as well as tappet. Further the install while turning adjusting each other until lining contacts surface outside rotor just barely drags . Also after this remove rotor again back down turning so that when installed lining doesn't touch anymore . The actual clearance between a shoe lining surface and inside braking surface of disk is 0.026 inches. For 2500/3500 models follow first steps for removing shoes same way but also include taking down two parking brake shoes hold downs per side– unhooking top & bottom return springs from both sides too. The installation process of these new shoes is exactly opposite to their removal including adjustments set forth during removal for lateral motion between linings themselves though they should be tightened according to torque specifications all bolts as well as nuts leading up this paragraph above.

    Q:
How to remove and install rear brake shoes on Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove and install rear brake shoes, first loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel. If the brake drum has never been removed, remove the drum retainer clip. Wash the brake assembly with brake system cleaner and allow it to drip dry into a pan. Unhook the lower spring and remove it, then remove the upper spring from the adjuster lever. Remove the adjuster lever, star-wheel assembly, front brake shoe, and rear shoe retainer. Pry open the clip to disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe. To install, lubricate the backing plate contact points and crimp the clip to attach the new rear shoe to the parking brake lever. Install the pin through the backing plate and the rear shoe, then install the spring and the retainer to the pin. Use a special tool to compress the spring and engage the retainer, and perform the same procedure on the front brake shoe. Clean and lubricate the star-wheel adjuster, then install the star-wheel assembly with the star to the front and the adjuster lever. Install the upper spring, hooking it into the adjuster, and the lower spring. Adjust the star wheel to give a very light drag when the brake drum is turned. Install the brake drum on the axle flange, pump the brake pedal, and turn the drum to listen for the sound of the shoes rubbing. If they are, turn the adjuster star wheel until the shoes stop rubbing. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the torque specifications. Make a number of forward and reverse stops to seat the shoes to the drum and to actuate the auto-adjusting mechanism. Check the operation of the parking brake and adjust if necessary, and check the operation of the brakes carefully before driving the vehicle.
