How to Remove and Install the Lock Cylinder on Buick Century? Posted by Customer
    A:
For vehicles without an air bag, place the ignition switch in the RUN position, then remove the lockplate, turn signal switch, and buzzer switch. Next, remove the screw and lock cylinder, being cautious not to drop the screw into the column, which would necessitate complete disassembly to retrieve it. To install, rotate the cylinder clockwise to align the key with the keyway in the housing, push the lock all the way in, and install the screw, tightening it to 14 inch lbs. for adjustable columns and 25 inch lbs. for standard columns. For vehicles with an air bag, turn the steering wheel so the wheels are straight ahead, place the ignition switch in the LOCK position, and disable the air bag system by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Remove the coil assembly retaining ring and disconnect the inflatable restraint coil assembly, allowing it to hang freely if not removed. Proceed to remove the wave washer and the shaft retaining lock ring using the appropriate tool, then remove the shaft lock and disconnect the canceling cam assembly. Remove the upper bearing spring, race seat, and race, position the turn signal to the right turn position, and remove the multi-function lever and hazard knob assembly. Unfasten the round washer head screw and the signal switch arm and turn signal switch screws, then remove the turn signal switch assembly by disconnecting the connector from the bulkhead and gently pulling on the harness. Ensure the coil assembly remains centered to prevent issues during removal. Remove the inflatable restraint coil assembly with the wiring harness, attach a length of mechanics wire to the coil terminal connector for reassembly, and gently pull the wire through the column. Remove the key from the steering column lock cylinder set and the buzzer switch assembly, then reinsert the key into the lock cylinder and turn it to the LOCK position. Remove the lock retaining screw and the cylinder. For installation, ensure all fasteners are securely seated before applying torque to avoid component damage. Install the lock cylinder assembly, insert the retaining screw, and tighten to 22 inch lbs. Insert the key into the lock cylinder, install the buzzer switch assembly, and turn the key to the LOCK position. Install the turn signal switch assembly wiring harness through the column, allowing the switch to hang freely, and connect the wiring to the bulkhead. Insert the coil assembly wiring harness through the column, letting the coil hang freely, then attach the turn signal assembly with binding head screws, tightening them to 30 inch lbs. Attach the signal switch arm with the round washer head screw, tightening it to 20 inch lbs., and install the hazard knob assembly and multi-function lever. Install the inner race, upper bearing race seat, and spring, then attach the turn signal cancelling cam assembly with grease for lubrication. Replace the shaft lock and install a new shaft lock retaining ring, ensuring it is firmly seated in the groove on the shaft. Set the steering shaft so that the block tooth on the race and upper shaft is at the 12 o'clock position, ensuring the vehicle's wheel is straight ahead, and set the ignition switch to the LOCK position to protect the coil assembly. Install the wave washer, attach the coil assembly while ensuring it is centered correctly, and secure the coil assembly retaining ring in the groove on the shaft. Gently pull the lower coil assembly, turn signal, and pivot wires to remove any kinks, then complete the assembly of the steering column and attach the negative battery cable. Finally, check the functions of the turn signal to ensure it cancels when activated and the steering wheel is turned.

    Q:
How to replace the turn signal switch assembly and Ignition Lock Cylinder on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The above procedure must be done using a special lock plate spring compressor, and in case of the presence of a tilt wheel it should be straightened. Start by removing the cable on the negative terminal of the battery and if the car has an airbag, then switch the airbag off. Models with anti-theft audio system require extra precautions, as the anti theft feature must be switched off prior to the battery disconnect. Removed next, the steering wheel together with the column trim plate and the lock plate cover in case it exists. For airbag-equipped models, the snap-ring and coil assembly are required to be dismantled so that the coil may rest by the wiring harness while the wave washer is taken out. One has to use a special tool and squish the lock plate to unlock and take off the retaining ring of the lock plate. On the 1995 and earlier models, the turn signal canceling cam and spring as well as the hazard warning knob and the turn signal lever arm screw have to be taken out, together with three switch mounting screws. Pull out steering column turn signal connector and if the switch is to be replaced pull out connectors from wiring harness assembly. Remove the turn signal switch assembly from the steering column, and if used alone on replacement, continue as follows. Using the needle nose pliers carefully pull the buzzer switch out of the pc board, do not lose the little retainer clip. Take out the Ignition Lock Cylinder retaining screw, rotate the key to the ON-position and pull it out of the steering column. The removal process is basically the opposite of the installation process where attention to properly connect the new switch wiring harness and to make certain that the airbag coil is well positioned. On 1996 and later models, it is necessary to remove the upper and lower steering column cover, lower the steering column if required, separate the cable tie for the switch wiring harness and plug the electrical connector. Depending on the model, there may be either three or six screws at the back of the combination switch; unscrew these to release the switch and withdraw it from the steering column, disconnecting it and the wiring harness pigtail at the same time; during the process of installation, use new cable ties to fix the new wiring harness. For the Ignition Lock Cylinder, insert the ignition key into the Start position plunge a 1/16" Allen wrench through the hole above the lock cylinder, and then, after turning the key back into the Run position; pull out the lock cylinder. Remove the upper and lower covers for the ignition switch, pull the alarm switch retaining clip with a screwdriver, then unplug the switch and the wiring harness at the firewall, and use cable ties to fasten the new harness.

How to remove and install Ignition Lock Cylinder on Cadillac Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
    A:
When working on Supple-mental inflatable Restraint (SIR) system components or wiring, make sure that the SIR system is off. By doing so, you will prevent impossible airbag deployment, unwanted SIR system repairs or any form of personal injury. For Deville, Fleetwood, Eldorado and Seville, disable the SIR system by disconnecting the negative battery cable, turning the ignition switch OFF, removing the SIR fuse, removing the left lower sound insulator and detaching the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column. At this point remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch before finally taking out key from lock cylinder and removing buzzer switch assembly; reinsert key in lock cylinder then turn to lock position. Remove lock retaining screw and lock cylinder. For vehicles equipped with pass-key lock cylinder, follow removal steps specific for it. Follow specific steps for your vehicle model to install. Enable SIR system after installation by connecting yellow 2-way connector at base of steering column, installing left lower sound insulator, installing SIR fuse ,connecting negative battery cable ,and turning ignition switch to RUN . Make sure that "INFLATABLE RESTRAINT" indicator light flashes off after flashing 7-9 times. Should this not happen as required by specification there is a fault in the SIR system.

    Q:
How is the lock cylinder removed and installed on the steering column on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
The lock cylinder is located on the upper right-hand side of the steering column. For models built in 1970, it can be removed in any position from 'ACCESSORY' to 'ON', but removal in 'LOCK' position is recommended. From 1971 onward, it should only be removed in the 'RUN' position to avoid damaging the warning buzzer switch. Begin by removing the steering wheel and directional signal switch, ensuring the switch is pushed rearwards enough to slip over the end of the shaft without pulling the harness out of the column. Use a thin blade screwdriver to break the housing flash loose while depressing the spring latch at the lower end of the lock cylinder, then withdraw the lock cylinder from the housing. The lock cylinder cannot be dismantled; a new one must be installed in the original cylinder sleeve after releasing the cylinder to sleeve staking. To assemble the new lock cylinder, insert the ignition key partway into the lock, place the wave washer and anti-theft ring onto the lower end, and ensure the plastic keeper in the sleeve protrudes. Align the lock bolt and anti-theft washer tab with the sleeve slot, push the lock cylinder fully onto the sleeve, insert the ignition key fully, and rotate the cylinder clockwise. Rotate the lock counterclockwise to 'LOCK', secure the lock assembly in a vise protected with wood or cloth, and install the adaptor ring onto the lower end of the cylinder. Tap the adaptor onto the cylinder until it reaches the bottom of the cylinder flats, projecting about an inch above the adaptor. Stake the lock cylinder over the adaptor ring in four positions just outboard of the four dimples. To install the new lock cylinder/sleeve assembly, hold the sleeve and rotate the lock clockwise against the stop, then insert the assembly into the housing, aligning the key on the cylinder sleeve with the housing keyway. Insert a 0.070 in diameter drill between the lock bezel and housing, rotate the cylinder counterclockwise while maintaining pressure until the drive section mates with the sector, then press in the lock cylinder until the snap-ring engages in the grooves. Finally, install the turn signal switch and steering wheel. For models from 1979 to 1981, the lock cylinder should also be removed in the 'RUN' position only, with similar steps for removal and installation, ensuring not to drop the lock retaining screw into the column.

How do you remove and install the lock cylinder on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
For models from 1969 to 1978, the lock cylinder is located on the upper right-hand side of the steering column. On models built through 1970, it can be removed in any position from 'ACCESSORY' to 'ON', but removal in the 'LOCK' position is recommended. From 1971 onward, it should only be removed in the 'RUN' position to avoid damaging the warning buzzer switch. Begin by removing the steering wheel and directional signal switch, ensuring the signal switch is pushed rearwards enough to slip over the end of the shaft without pulling the harness out of the column. Insert a thin blade into the slot in the turn signal switch housing to break the housing flash loose while depressing the spring latch at the lower end of the lock cylinder, then withdraw the lock cylinder. Align the lock bolt and anti-theft washer tab with the sleeve slot, push the lock cylinder fully onto the sleeve, insert the ignition key fully, and rotate the cylinder clockwise before rotating it counterclockwise to 'LOCK'. Q:
How Do You Remove and Install Ignition Lock Cylinder on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Operations for removal and installation of the components are divided in a sequential way starting from those parts which are located close to the upper part of the steering column. Start with the removal of the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, unless for the models with Delco Loe II audio systems the anti-theft system should be turned off. Align the front wheels towards the right direction, switch of the ignition off and take out the key. Third, pull the steering wheel off. For models from 1990 and later, set the airbag system off, then unbolt the airbag coil retaining snap-ring and the coil assembly should hang by the wiring harness. Depending on airbag coil reinstallation, center it with help of spring lock depressed while retaining the hub as it is told, and then release the spring lock. Release the horn contact bushing and spring, demold the plastic cover of the steering column, and detached the shaft lock if it is necessary to use a special U-shaped tool. Remove the canceling cam assembly and the upper bearing preload spring and, if no other part is going to be replaced, proceedings for assembly should be undertaken in reverse order while making sure that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position. For the turn signal switch it is necessary to remove the lever attaching screw, then unscrew the hazard warning knob and remove the three mounting screws. Remove the screw holding the turn signal switch and pull the switch with the attached wiring harness from the top of the steering column and disconnect the turn signal switch wiring connector. If no other components are to be remove then follow the instructions to install it and be sure that the wiring harness is covered. For ignition lock cylinder, put it in RUN, take out ignition key warning switch and cautiously unscrew the lock retaining screw with the magnetised screw driver. Slide the lock cylinder away and insert it into the right position for the keyway and lock it in place by pushing it in and tightening retaining screw. The ignition key warning switch can be freely integrated and isolated from the ignition lock. Should the ignition lock cylinder remain functioning, place the key into the Run position, and using stiff wire pull out the switch, make sure that the buzzer switch actuating button is pressed down before fitting in the new warning switch; Other remaining components can then be reassembled.

    Q:
How do you remove the steering lock cylinder on Pontiac Fiero? Posted by Customer
    A:
To unlock the steering Ignition Lock Cylinder step down the process by eliminating the negative terminal of the battery. Then, unlock the shaft and take off the steering wheel followed by the removal of the lock shaft cap which is usually done by applying pressure at three spots indicated on the cap with a small screwdriver. Place the shaft lock depressor and turn the nut till it rests a little on the shaft lock after this pull the retaining ring off the groove of the steering shaft. Also eliminate the steering shaft lock plate and the cancelling cam assembly and in addition to that eliminate the hazard flasher switch after pulling a Phillips screw that holds the switch to the turn signal switch. New The switch actuator arm assembly must also be unbolted, as does the turn signal switch assembly in order to get to the Ignition Lock Cylinder retaining bolt. Turn the three screws that hold the turn signal switch and ignore the turn signal switch wire harness connector that can be disconnected where it connects at the base of the steering column cover. Take out the Ignition Lock Cylinder retaining screw, rotate the Ignition Lock Cylinder to the On position and then all the way out. For installation of the Ignition Lock Cylinder, rotate the Ignition Lock Cylinder to the 'ON' position and then set it and fasten the lock retaining screw. Connect the turn signal wire harness connector and the wire harness again inside the steering column cover and plug it into the lower terminal of the steering column cover. Bolt the three screws as tight as possible for the switch actuator arm assembly before putting the switch actuator arm assembly in its rightful position with a tight retaining screw. Place the knob of the hazard flasher switch and tighten the Phillips screw for retaining it, next is the cancelling cam and the shaft lock. The steering shaft lock plate retaining ring should be placed on the groove of the steering shaft after which the shaft lock cover should be replaced. Last but not least fix the steering wheel and connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
