Cylinder engines that have a distributor-less ignition system, whereby the ignition coils are connected directly to the spark plug wires. While in V6 engine case, there is a distributor that is located at the back of the block. The spark plug wires need regular inspection usually on the recommended intervals and also every time new plugs are fitted. It is important to look at one wire at a time when inspecting them so as not mix their order, this is crucial in proper working of an engine. To disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug, grab the rubber boot, twist slightly, and pull the wire off. Avoid pulling on the wire itself, only on the rubber boot. Loosen all the mounting screws on the distributor cap and on some models it is held in place by clips that can be released by pressing down on them with a screwdriver and turning them about 1/2-turn or just one quarter of a turn for others. You can then lift up on the cap and remove it from the distributor while still leaving the wires attached. The rotor, which is located at the end of the distributor shaft, should be examined for signs of cracks, carbon tracks, corrosion or wear. Upon removal of the old rotor from its shaft, it can be replaced with a new one. It is indexed to fit only one way on its shaft. Carbon tracks and cracks are also among things people should look for when doing an inspection of this part. While checking the inside of this part, closely examine terminals for presence of excessive corrosion or damage. Replace if uncertain as to whether cap is still good. One by one move these wires over onto each corresponding new position in case you need to change your vehicle's cap when wires are being relocated into correct positions so as not to lose track of where they belong within the firing order sequence . Lastly it should be reattached onto distributor where either screws are tightened or latches are repositioned that hold it in place.
