When removing the cables, always take away the negative battery cables first and hook them up last so that you may not inadvertently short circuit the battery with the tool you are using to loosen the cable clamps. Even you replace only the cable for positive terminal, thereafter remember to disconnect the negative cable from battery. If replacing any of them, take with when buying new ones. While disconnecting each of these cables, it is crucial to keep note of their routing to ensure proper installation later. Vitally important it is that identical parts are used in replacing these cables. Threads on solenoids or ground connections should be cleaned off rust and corrosion by a wire brush. A thin layer of petroleum jelly or battery terminal corrosion inhibitor should be applied on threads to prevent future corrosion. Attach the cable to the solenoid or ground connection and tighten up on mounting nut/bolt securely. When fitting a new cable onto a battery, it should not be extended in order to contact a post. First connect your cable at positive battery terminal while your ground cable connects at negative battery terminal.

Clean the threads of the solenoid or ground connection with a wire brush to remove rust and corrosion. Apply a light coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to the threads to prevent future corrosion.
