The starter as well as solenoid assembly should be removed from the vehicle. The starter housing should have the solenoid removed from it. For easy reassembly, scribe any information about commutator end frame and field frame housing relationship. Remove the starter in-bolts. The end frame must be pulled from field frame housing. Mark the relationship of the drive end housing to the field frame housing (Before separating the field frame from the drive end housing ensure you scribe alignment marks on starter housing). Thereafter, remove drive end housing and field frame assembly carefully to remove it away over the armature (After removing through-bolts and commutator end frames, carefully separate field frame from the drive end housing). Brushes and brush supports will then be unbolted from their locations in brush holders located within field frame housing. To install new brushes, attach them to a brush support so that they are flush with its bottom and tighten them into place within brush holder by use of bolts. At this point, put down brushes on first step of armature collar and then place entire assembly together on top of an armature shaft with brushes overhanging an edge of a collar before slipping it onto the armature shaft. Also ensure that a brush is properly aligned with its respective holder and moved down above a collar until contact is broken between them by pushing each brush off collar at which point they will fall into place on armature. Installation remainder steps are converse to removal.

Remove the starter and solenoid assembly from the vehicle. Remove the solenoid from the starter housing. Remove the starter motor throughbolts after marking the relationship of the commutator end frame to the field frame housing to simplify reassembly. Remove the end frame from the field frame housing. Mark the relationship of the field frame housing to the drive end housing and pull the field frame housing away from the drive end housing and over the armature. Unbolt the brushes and brush supports from the brush holders in the field frame housing. To install new brushes, attach the brushes to the brush supports, making sure they are flush with the bottom of the supports, and bolt the brushes/supports to the brush holders. Install the field frame over the armature, with the brushes resting on the first step of the armature collar at this point (note the position of the brushes on the armature collar). Make sure the field frame is properly aligned with the drive end housing, then push the brushes off the collar into place on the armature. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of those for removal.
