    Q:
How should spark plug wires be checked and maintained on Chevrolet Impala? Posted by Customer
    A:
The spark plug wires should be checked at recommended intervals or every time new spark plugs have been fitted on the vehicle. This can be done by merely looking at the spark plug wire during the running of the engine at night or when the garage is dark and well ventilated. Turn on the engine and look at all the plug wires without having to touch any of the spinning parts. If possible try touching an insulated object on each of the wires; when the insulation is broken on a particular wire it will spark or produce a small blue flame. Because secondary ignition voltage rises with an engine speed, a faulty wire may not spark at idle; ask an assistant to rev the engine to about 2000 rpm and look for sparks again. If arcing is visible in a car, then there is need to replace all spark plug wires. To remove a plug wire, always make sure the engine is off, one must grip the bottom rubber boot and twist it slightly; when this is done do not pull on the wire but pull the wire free from the termination. Look for signs of rust within the boot and it will show a white crusty powder Also the boot needs to sit tightly on the top of the spark plug. If it is not 'snug', then disconnect the wire and squeeze the metallic tab at the end of the boot using a pair of pliers. Clean the entire surface of the wire using a clean cloth to remove dirt, grease or any kind of contaminants and then look for the presence of pinholes, carbonized zones, cracks and other form of damages on the wire such that one should not bend it to intensely. Remove the wire from ignition coil terminals pulling it vertically, then inspect the wire for signs of corrosion or tight connection before reconnecting it. Exam the remaining spark plug wires individually to make sure that are connected firmly in both ends. In case of buying the spark plug wires, get an original new set suitable for the particular model of an engine.

    Q:
How should spark plug wires be checked and what should be done if arcing is noticed on Pontiac G6? Posted by Customer
    A:
The spark plug wires should be checked at recommended intervals or whenever new spark plugs are installed. Begin by making a visual check of the spark plug wires while the engine is running. In a darkened garage with adequate ventilation or at night, start the engine and observe each plug wire, taking care not to come into contact with any moving engine parts. If possible, use an insulated or non-conductive object to wiggle each wire. A break in the wire will result in arcing or a small blue spark from the damaged area. Since secondary ignition voltage increases with engine speed, a damaged wire may not produce an arc at idle speed; therefore, have an assistant press the accelerator pedal to raise the engine speed to approximately 2000 rpm and check for arcing again. If arcing is noticed, replace all spark plug wires.

    Q:
How do you properly disconnect a spark plug wire for the 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo? Posted by Customer
    A:
To disconnect a plug wire, ensure the engine is off, grab the rubber boot, twist slightly, and pull the wire free without pulling on the wire itself.
