If your vehicle is not equipped with an airbag, disregard the steps that do not apply. Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal, ensuring that on models with the Theft lock audio system, the lockout feature is turned off before any procedure requiring battery disconnection. Next, disable the airbag system. Remove the airbag module retaining screws from the backside of the steering wheel; later models have four spring clips securing the airbag module, accessible through openings on the back of the wheel. Turn the wheel until two slots are at the top, use a flat-bladed tool to release the clips, and then rotate the wheel for access to the other clips. After that, remove the airbag module and unplug the electrical connectors, noting that a plastic clip must be removed before disconnecting. When handling the airbag module, keep the driver's side away from your body and place it with the driver's side facing up. If applicable, remove the safety clip from the steering shaft using snap-ring pliers. Then, remove the steering wheel retaining nut, marking the relationship of the steering wheel to the steering shaft, and disconnect the horn and ground wires. Use a steering wheel puller to separate the steering wheel from the shaft, avoiding the use of a hammer. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the steering wheel nut is tightened to the specified torque, and finally, enable the airbag system.
