    Q:
How do you remove the Automatic transmission? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the negative battery cable and then raise the vehicle to allow you to drain off the transmission fluid by removing the transmission pan. You can mark both the torque converter and driveplate in order to facilitate proper reassembly after you have removed the torque converter cover. Next, remove starter motor as well as the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts, driveshaft(s), exhaust components, vehicle speed sensor, wire harness connectors, vacuum hose (if equipped with a 3L80/3L80-HD), and other parts that need to be disconnected. The TV cable should be disconnected if it is equipped with a 4L60 (700R-4). Take out shift linkage/cable and support engine/transmission using jacks. Remove cross-member-to-frame nuts and bolts, rear transmission mount-to-crossmember nut and crossmember along with it. Slightly lower down the transmission; disconnect and plug off its cooler lines for transmission fluid. Ensure that torque converter is secured while removing transmission dipstick tube. Make sure that once installed, the torque converter hub is tightly engaged in the pump. For 1996 and later models: Install new quick-connector fitting E-clips into transmission cooler line fittings and then raise transmission into position while keeping it level so that torque converter does not slide out of place. Connect transmission fluid cooler lines securely. Align marks on the driveplate to the ones on torque converter by turning this one around until they match up correctly. It is important to carefully move forward with caution so that dowel pins would just contact bellhousing holes before tightening bolts which secure transmission housing-to-engine securely, finally installing them inside these two orifices where they will be secure enough as well if nothing else happens during such process either like falling apart when trying again later because everything needed will have actually fallen apart if anything broken before moving forward first could still work even though some things might not want anyone looking further than someone else anyway while most people are just doing what needs them right now. Afterwards, screw in the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts as well as the crossmember then drop the mount stud into its hole. Jacks have supported transmission and engine, so you need to put dipstick tube, starter motor, vacuum hose(s) (if equipped), shift and TV linkage or cable, wire harness connectors, torque converter cover, driveshaft(s), speedometer cable; follow up with exhaust system components. Lower the vehicle, fill the transmission with the specified fluid, start the engine, and check for fluid leaks.
