    Q:
How do you remove and install MacPherson struts on a Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove and install struts on your vehicle, you should follow these steps. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then, raise and support the vehicle securely so that it is supported by the frame with control arms hanging free. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. On Eldorado and Seville models equipped with this device, take off the electrical connector from the top of the strut. For Deville and Fleetwood Models, slacken the strut housing tie bar through bolts at each end. On Eldorado and Seville models having a 4.6L Engine only, get out road sensing suspension position sensor from lower control arm. Take off nuts attaching top of strut to body. In case there are anti-lock brakes on DeVille and Fleetwood models, disconnect wheel speed sensor/bracket from strut bracket. Also remove stabilizer link from strut linking pulled out brake line bracket for Eldorado and Seville models. Lastly, remove strut-to-knuckle bolts while supporting knuckle with wire to prevent damage to ball joint or halfshaft. To install new one attach it to knuckle using bolts/nuts then attach it to body with nuts for DeVille/Fleetwood Models place washer/tie bar before installing strut-to-body nuts. Install brake line bracket onto strut. On Eldorado/Seville link stabilizer back again through removing same (Eld) or brake line bracket on sturt (Sev). In addition put road sensing suspension sensor into lower control arm plus connect electrical connector at top of stut if equipped (ElD). Tighten down; Strut-to-Knuckle Bolts-140 ft-lbs(190Nm), Strut-to-Body Nuts-18 ft-lbs(24 Nm), Stabilizer Link Nuts-48ft lbs.(65Nm), Tie Bar Through Bolts-20ft-lb(27Nm). Finally, install the wheel and tire assembly, lower the vehicle, and check and adjust the front wheel alignment as necessary. To overhaul strut assembly first mount it in a strut compressor tool like J-34013 or an equivalent. Twist the compression forcing screw up to spring compressing slightly. A T-50 Torx bit should be used to prevent turning of strut shaft while nut at top of strut shaft is removed. Release compressor screw letting strut shaft guide out from assembly. Continue to release compressor screw until strut and spring can be removed. To install, mount the strut in the compressor tool, using clamping tool J-34013-20 or an equivalent to hold the strut shaft in place. Install spring onto upper frame where flat on upper spring seat faces outward from centerline of car or same direction as steering knuckle mounting flange. If bearing was removed from upper spring seat reinstall it in same position before attaching it to shock absorber mount. Now turn compressing screw pushing through top part of shock absorber body and guide out a rod only if needed use tool J-34013-38 or its equivalent. Mount the washer and nut when you are able to see the threads of the strut shaft through the top of the strut assembly. Now, remove clamping tool J-34013-20 from the strut shaft and tighten down the nut for the strut shaft to 55 ft lbs (75 Nm) while holding onto it with a T-50 Torx bit. Until you finally take off this compressor tool, which is mounted on that strut assembly, please, remember not to switch off anything about that linkage rod.

    Q:
What steps should be followed when installing the strut for the 1991 Cadillac ElDorado? Posted by Customer
    A:
When installing the strut, ensure the wiring is upright and centered on the strut mount if equipped with Computer Command Ride. Tighten the strut tower mounting nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the strut-to-knuckle nuts to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm). Moisten the air line O-rings with lubricant and push the air line and connector fully into the fitting. Reattach the electrical connector if equipped with Computer Command Ride.
