    Q:
How to remove the rear brake shoes? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the rear brake shoes, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the rear of the vehicle, supporting it securely on jackstands. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel. Then, remove the adjuster lever and the star-wheel assembly. Depress the front shoe retainer and turn it to remove it, followed by removing the front brake shoe. Remove the rear shoe retainer and allow the shoe to come free. Pry open the clip to disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe. For installation, begin by lubricating the backing plate contact points after thoroughly cleaning it. Crimp the clip to attach the new rear shoe to the parking brake lever and install the pin through the backing plate and the rear shoe. Install the spring and the retainer to the pin, using a special tool to compress the spring and engage the retainer. Repeat the same procedure for the front brake shoe. Clean the star-wheel adjuster and lightly lubricate it before installing the star-wheel assembly with the star to the front. Install the adjuster lever and the upper spring, hooking it into the adjuster. Install the lower spring and adjust the star wheel to give a very light drag when the brake drum is turned. Before reinstalling the drum, it should be checked for cracks, score marks, deep scratches, and hard spots. If any of these conditions exist, the drum must be taken to have it resurfaced.

    Q:
How to remove and adjust the Parking Brake Shoes? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the rear brake discs, start by measuring the thickness of the lining material on the shoes. If it is 1mm or less, the shoes should be replaced. Inspect the drum portion of the disc for any scoring, grooves, or cracks caused by heat. If any of these conditions exist or if there is significant wear to the drum, the disc must be replaced. Wash off the brake parts with brake system cleaner. Turn the star wheel adjuster until it is at its shortest setting, with the threads disappearing into the adjuster. Remove the adjuster springs, adjuster, and return spring. Then, remove the rear shoe hold-down retainer, spring, pin, and shoe, followed by the forward shoe hold-down retainer, spring, pin, and shoe. Thoroughly clean the backing plate and lubricate the brake shoe contact areas with high-temperature grease. Clean and lubricate the adjuster. To install the brakes, place the forward shoe in position and install the hold-down retainer, spring, and pin. Repeat this step for the rear shoe. Install the return spring, adjuster, and adjuster spring. Install the brake disc and secure it against the hub using two lug nuts with washers. Adjust the rear parking brake shoes. Install the caliper bracket and brake caliper, ensuring that the bolts are tightened to the specified torque. Finally, install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Check the parking brake for proper operation and readjust if necessary.
