- A:The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor informs the PCM about engine speed and piston position, controlling ignition and injector timing. On SOHC engines, it's at the rear of the cylinder head; on DOHC engines, it's on the sensor case. The sensor uses a rotor and Hall effect element to generate a voltage signal for the PCM. In 1990+ Samurai and 1992-1998 Sidekick/Tracker models, it's in the distributor. But in 1999+ Vitara/Tracker models, it's on the cylinder head's back.
