By analyzing exhaust gas samples before and after the catalytic converter, the PCM can assess the converter's efficiency and predict potential failures. The primary (upstream) oxygen sensor (sensor 1) resides in the exhaust manifold, while the secondary (downstream) oxygen sensor (sensor 2) is positioned behind the catalytic converter. It is crucial to handle sensors with care:The oxygen and air/fuel sensors have attached pigtails and electrical connectors that must not be detached, as this can disrupt sensor operation.Keep grease, dirt, and contaminants away from the electrical connector and the sensor's louvered end.Avoid using cleaning solvents on these sensors.Handle oxygen and air/fuel sensors gently to prevent damage.Ensure proper installation of the silicone boot to prevent melting and maintain sensor functionality. To replace the downstream sensor, raise the vehicle, unplug the electrical connector inside the vehicle following the oxygen sensor harness through the floor pan. For the upstream sensor, which can be replaced without lifting the vehicle, remove the engine cover and unplug the connector following the harness from the sensor mounted in the exhaust manifold. Unscrew the sensor from the exhaust manifold or pipe using a slotted socket, applying anti-seize compound to the threads for future removal, while being cautious not to contaminate the sensor tip. Reconnect the electrical connector, lower the vehicle if necessary, test drive it, and confirm the absence of trouble codes.
